Frequently Asked Questions
FAQs
Our primary service is medication management. During visits we will have time to engage in supportive psychotherapy to help process stressors you are facing and find solutions to break down barriers in your journey of growth and healing, examine behaviors and their meaning, develop coping skills to manage anxiety and other difficult emotions, and discuss lifestyle modification and integrative approaches to improve your overall mental health and wellbeing.
Our philosophy of care is to meet people where they are at and we understand the barriers that people face when trying to heal.
Additionally, we believe in the importance of self-efficacy and the value of individuals being active participants in their care. Therefore, it’s necessary to come to treatment with an open mind to try new things, and have a willingness to partner in taking action steps to actively improve your mental health.
Yes, if deemed appropriate following an in-depth assessment of history and symptoms. Our process for diagnosing ADHD includes a 60 minute general psychiatric evaluation in which we screen for/rule out some of the most common mental health conditions.
If it is determined by our assessment that your primary symptoms/concerns are likely stemming from a condition other than ADHD, our approach is to first treat the primary diagnosis and then reassess for residual symptoms of ADHD to determine whether diagnosis and treatment are necessary.
If ADHD is determined to be a primary target for treatment, we will do a more in depth assessment at a second visit which may include a further targeted interview and/or cognitive testing (administered by us).
If psychological testing by a psychologist has already been completed and supports the diagnosis of ADHD, that may suffice in regards to assessment/testing for ADHD, though comorbid mental health conditions may be prioritized for treatment as deemed by our provider prior to targeting ADHD symptoms.
ADHD is a nuanced condition with significant symptom overlap with a variety of other mental health conditions. For example, someone who has unmanaged depression or anxiety can have significant issues with concentration/attention/motivation that mimic ADHD but improve or resolve once the primary condition is treated appropriately.
Additionally, many of the medications used in the treatment of ADHD carry an elevated risk for misuse, abuse, and diversion, and therefore, it’s imperative that healthcare providers follow appropriate assessment and treatment guidelines to reduce these risks. These medications are also not without risks for serious adverse effects, and therefore, we have to prioritize safety in prescribing them.
While controlled substances such as stimulants (Adderall, Ritalin, etc.) and Benzodiazepines (Ativan, Xanax, Klonopin, etc.) have their place for use in psychiatry, we believe that in many situations the risks associated with these medications outweigh their benefits. Therefore, prescription of these substances is limited to situations in which there is an evidence-based reason for their use, which will be determined through a thorough assessment and weighing of the risk vs. benefits of prescribing these medications.
We adhere to strict, evidence-based practice recommendations when utilizing these medications, meant to maximize safety and minimize risk.
We do not prescribe medications like benzodiazepines on a scheduled and ongoing basis due to risk for dependence, tolerance, and addiction.
Should you be prescribed a controlled substance, you will be subject to our controlled substance policy which is required by the practice and will be discussed in-depth during your appointment.
We offer both!
We offer in-person appointments at our clinic in Hudson, Wisconsin. We also offer telehealth as a convenient way to get your healthcare, offering the same high quality care and outcomes that you get from an in-person appointment.
Note that for certain situations it may be required that you have an in-person appointment initially and on an occasional ongoing basis to satisfy federal requirements related to prescribing of certain medications.
Once your appointment is scheduled, you will receive a reminder message prior to your appointment that will include a link for you to join the telehealth session via your computer or phone.
You MUST be located either in Minnesota or Wisconsin at the time of your visit. Make sure that at the time of the visit you’re in a quiet spot with good reception or a strong wifi connection to minimize connection issues.
